Gram City
Design Sprint
The Brief
Gramcity is a photo editing app that helps users easily make their photos look awesome before sharing them on instagram or other social media networks
The Goal
Gramcity wants to explore how and where they can help their users find great photo-ops near them.
My Role
As the lead designer I did the research, competitive analysis, user journey, sketching, prototyping and user testing according to the Google Ventures Sprint model.
Tool used:
Adobe XD, Invision, Maze
Map
On the first day of the sprint, I took the provided user research and narrowed down the personas and their main usability wishes.
Then I went and researched existing apps that are similar to conduct a competitive analysis. Combining all the information I now had I sketched out a user journey in preparation for the next day of sketches.
User Research
Gramcity provided a brief that included user research data
Competitive Analysis
To give me general ideas to start with I took a look at competitor apps that had features our users want. I evaluated which features could be helpful and which features weren’t as appealing.
User Journey
After taking the personas and user desires into account a drew a user journey map to help set me up for sketches the next day.
Sketch
Crazy 8 Sketches
With all the information I now had I brainstormed as many screen as I could think of off the top of my head
Narrowing down
Reviewing the screens I narrowed my ideas down to 3 main screens off which I could build a prototype
Decide
Storyboarding
Once a main red route was decided on from the sketches, I created a storyboard mapping the users journey as they select and find directions to an instagrammable location
This is where I now focused on developing the screens for the final high fidelity prototype, incorporating a pink theme similar to the company branding.
The overall look was supposed to be fun and youthful based on the target demographic.
Usability Testing
User Feedback
The icon used for the navigation/directions was confusing because it looked like a location pin
Testers wanted descriptions of the nature of photo locations
Some users felt they wanted immediate suggestions based on their location, rather than city suggestions
The Prototype
Take Away
Overall I really like the sprint process. It’s a focused and efficient way to solve problems and I look forward to completing one with a design team in the future. I can see the benefits of using multiple sprints on the same project for efficient iteration as well or to address specific challenges within an application or website. Designating certain tasks per day really helps break things down and takes off the pressure for a more quick and well structured approach.
